Ellen Prendergast

PRENDERGAST, Ellen (Nellie)

Ellen Prendergast, known as Nellie, was born in Tralee on the 8th of August 1891 to James Prendergast and Catherine (Kate) Connor. There were seven children born, the eldest of whom died in infancy. James was a Slater and Plasterer and his work sometimes took him away from home. He was absent from Tralee in the 1901 census, but was found in Kenmare as a Boarder, accompanied by his fourteen year old son, described as an Apprentice Plasterer. The family lived in Strand Street in Tralee, where there was also another Prendergast family.

It is not known why Nellie Prendergast was travelling on RMS Leinster on the 10th of October 1918 but she survived the sinking and was treated in St Michael’s Hospital in Kingstown. She obviously returned to live in Tralee as in January 1920 she married Peter Lydon there. Perhaps surprisingly, Peter was a Sailor, as was his father.
