CHRYSTAL, Frederick Frederick Chrystal was a farmer from Sligo. He was born on 14th April 1876 at Derrylehan, Co. Sligo to John and Mary Elizabeth Chrystal (aka Crystal). It would appear his mother was a Chrystal by birth as well as marriage, though she was the second wife of John. On 27th June 1904, Frederick Chrystal married Kate Kerins in Sligo. By 1911, the couple had had 6 children, 4 of whom were still alive: John, Gerard, Mary and Thomas. Fred was a popular man in the cattle trade, well-known in Sligo and the surrounding counties. Very sadly, Fred and his family were due to move to a new house the week after the Leinster sank: Doonamurray House in Ballintogher. The Sligo Champion reported that his funeral was the largest ever seen in Sligo. Fred was buried in a family plot at Ahamlish, Co. Sligo.
