Alfred Patch

PATCH, Alfred

Alfred Patch was born in Pancras, London in 1887, he was one of 11 children of Robert Edmund and Emma Jane Patch (née Mines), who had married in London in 1880. His father, Robert, was employed as a Railway Checker and in 1911 the family were living on Pelham Road, Woodgreen, London.

Alfred enlisted in the 3rd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment and was posted to France.  While serving there he married Rose Elizabeth Annie Birch, born in London in 1889. The marriage was recorded under GRO Army Marriages within British Lines (1914-1925). The actual date and place were not recorded and it is not known why Rose was in France. Rose was one of 11 children of George and Henrietta Birch. Her father was a Grocer in Bromley. Alfred and Rose had a daughter, Rose E. M. Patch, born in Edmonton, London in 1917.

The 3rd Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment moved to Cork in 1918 and Alfred was presumably travelling home on leave on the RMS Leinster. He died in the sinking and his body was not recovered. His only daughter married in 1940 and his widow died in 1966.
